Farming Game
From Ground to Sky
Revolutionizing Farming with Pfaltzgraff Farms
At Pfaltzgraff Farms in Northeast Colorado, innovation isn't just a buzzword; it's how they stay ahead in the farming game.
This family-run farm, now in its third generation, has taken a smart turn by diving into the world of sustainable jet fuel production from camelina, thanks to a boost from the 2023 Inflation Reduction Act.
While the meal is simple cattle feed the oil is now powering planes, showing just how outside-the-box thinking can open up new revenue paths.
But that’s not all they’ve done…with the help of federal grants, they've completely modernized their operations. From GPS-guided no-till farming to strategic crop diversification, these advancements have tripled their income – setting Pfaltzgraff Farms apart in the competitive agricultural sector.
It's not just about farming differently; it's about making those changes count financially.
How They Did It
Aviation and Biofuels
-
The benefit from this crop in the rotation is because it provides diversity and helps maintain a living root during times that would usually be fallow. As a brassica there is less leaching of nitrates and with less nitrogen use with these crops it decreases the need for these inputs for the following crop. Camelina creates a visible change in soil quality that farmers with an eye for soil health will appreciate.
-
Funding for this research is being provided by the Climate Smart Commodity Grants with the USDA ($2.8 Billion). Pfz Farms is not receiving direct funds through this research, but is receiving a premium for the camelina that is raised during this project.
Solar Program
-
that solar panels can also improve soil moisture retention and protect against wind erosion?
With the help of an array of smart solar panels, Pfz Farms has seen 90 mph winds whip through the area without causing any damage to the fields, and at the same time see less soil moisture evaporation! This brand new solar panel design also allows Pfz Farms to fully farm around them thanks to their rotational capabilities.
Beyond field health, solar panels can help qualify you for government incentives, further boosting your bottom line.
Go solar, and watch your farm's efficiency soar and profits grow—all while contributing positively to the planet.

Colorado Department of Agriculture supported grant to study the how to integrate smart solar panels in a working agricultural setting.
Funding for this research is being provided by the CDA. Pfz Farms is receiving reimbursement for land use.
Headlands
-
field, and has the lowest return on investment.
This doesn’t have to be the case.
What can you do? How can you increase your yield in this area? What if you planted something else here that has the resiliency to endure heavy equipment, compaction, and give you income?
These are exactly the questions Roy was asking when he teamed up with Colorado Parks and Wildlife to plant pollinator strips in these areas. These resilient plants not only keeps weeds out – decreasing the need for pesticides – but have the potential of increasing yields by supporting bee and insect populations!
-
Roy’s headlands were drilled for this purpose by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife in early April 2024, and will continue to be maintained for the next five years.
