Not Just for the Birds, anymore.
Proso millet is a staple on our farm, it is a shallow rooted grass that is drilled in June and harvested in September or October. In some countries it is a main ingredient in their diets, but in the United States it is reduced to bird feed and other livestock feed. One interesting use is it is used for as a medium for growing mushrooms.
We are currently working on getting it hulled so we can sell it for use as food here in the United States, too. Recently there is demand for it as it is a gluten free food that can be used in place of quinoa and rice. It is higher in protein and lower in carbs than other grains. It has many vitamins and minerals to make it a healthy alternative in your diet. We are looking forward to offering it to you soon after harvest.
